Balancing atop balls, the Murata Cheerleaders roll into Japan’s robot spotlight
Murata, a leading Japanese manufacturer of advanced electronic components, unveiled a group of gravity-defying robots in Tokyo this morning to showcase the company’s latest sensing and communication technologies.
Dubbed the Murata Cheerleaders, the ten small robots – about a foot tall each – balanced on top of metal balls and rolled around the stage in various formations without bumping into each other. The presenters faced a brief “Asimo moment” when a few of the robots fell over – leading the curtain to close and the music to stop – but the issue was quickly corrected before the curtain opened a second time.

It’s not a secret we love robots here at BLR, so we wanted them to be the heroes in our latest promo clip. Luxury cars with powerful engines to drive through roads under severe speed restrictions, cable TV that allows us to pay to watch all kind of sports, all from our comfortable sofa, and of course, hyper expensive cell phones that do almost everything but making a decent phone call.
Yes, our happiness is based on things we don’t need and governed by entities we don’t control, so what? Sit down and turn on the tv!
The robots were taken from real Japanese robot model kits, and they now hold a privileged position in our freak museum. The bad guy spits real smoke out of its mouth! The environment is made of cardboard houses that were integrated with the help of camera tweaks. It all serves to the purpose of creating a dumb homogeneous atmosphere in which we’re defined by what we’ve got, that is, the same lame things.
Don’t take the message too seriously. This is a promo video we’ve done to laugh at ourselves. We all have an i-diot inside, and it’s so fun!

Robotic Spider Dress
Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht collaborated with Austrian software developer Daniel Schatzmayr to create the "Robotic Spider Dress", because the legs of the mechanical arachnid move when movement is detected nearby.
A prototype of a mechanic dress equipped with sensors indicators and controllers, created with the aim to give more power and 'psychological thrills' to the sugar sweet character that performative wearables often have. Sensoric, servo controlled, mechanic, microcontroller based and reacting//attacking upon approach, inspired by the game LIMBO.

If mankind decides to colonize Mars, Le Petit Prince would be a good partner to bring along. This robotic greenhouse concept by Martin Miklica is designed to help the exploration and population of Mars by protecting plants and scavenging the planet for nutrients. Le Petit Prince carries a plant inside its glass container and provides it with everything it needs to flourish on the red planet. The greenhouse robot is designed to learn the optimal process of searching for nutrients, and it can send reports to its fellow robots through wireless communication, enabling them to learn from one another.
